November 13-19th and November 20th
From November 13-19th we recognize Transgender Awareness Week, leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on November 20. This important observance began as a vigil for Rita Hester, a trans woman tragically murdered in 1998. Through this time, we honour lives lost to transphobic violence and stand in solidarity with the trans and gender diverse community.
As a school district, we are committed to creating safe, inclusive environments where all students, staff, and families are treated with dignity and respect. It deeply saddens us that many individuals still feel unsafe expressing their authentic selves in schools.
Transgender Awareness Week is an opportunity to educate ourselves about the experiences and systemic barriers faced by the trans community. We invite all members of our school community to join us in learning how we can be better allies and advocates. For resources or ways to offer support to trans and gender-diverse individuals, visit Trans qathet, We Are Allies, or check out Tips for Allies of Transgender People.
Let us take this time commit to fostering an environment where every individual can thrive. Together, we can build a future where everyone feels safe and valued.
